MOVES
Massy Arts Gallery, Vancouver
EXHIBITION - December 2021
Moves explores how body movement can communicate joy, sensuality and connection.
The concept for this series grew out of my fascination with still photographs of dancers, swimmers and gymnasts. I found myself drawn to what could be learned from one captured moment – about both the subject’s body and their mind. Limbs, muscles, and facial expressions all captivated me and I wanted to build upon these moments. This led to an exploration of body movement and expression using pen drawings and a striking colour palette. By removing the context of the source material, each figure—dancer, swimmer, gymnast—begins to take on a new meaning. The female form, when isolated and altered, becomes a powerful symbol portraying to viewers the strange as well as the sublime.
For me, this collection portrays the body as a tool for communication, rather than an object we merely look at. These subjects tell stories with their movements as they move in darkness—eyes always closed—through environments of light.
Repetition is also integral to this series. Often, a subject has been repeated multiple times to create a sense of rhythm and movement. The repeated subjects are highlighted with bright colours in order to add a surrealist element to the piece. With overlapping or side-by-side images, subtle differences become important.
I hope that most people can relate to the feeling: being compelled to move your body at the sound of a perfect song, the taste of a favourite meal or the sight of an important person, not being able to sit still, moving because it feels wrong not to.
This series invites the viewer to explore those moments within each piece, to reflect on those moments within their own lives, to feel the movement in their own bodies.
Moves includes ten acrylic paintings of different sizes on birch wood panels.
